How to Get a DUNS Number (and Why You Need One)

If you have started researching business credit, you have almost certainly come across the term DUNS number. It shows up on vendor applications, federal contract requirements, and business credit monitoring platforms. Yet many business owners either skip getting one or delay it because the process seems unclear. This guide covers exactly what a DUNS number is, why it matters, and how to get one without paying a dime.

What Is a DUNS Number?

A DUNS number is a unique nine-digit identifier assigned by Dun & Bradstreet to businesses in their database. The name stands for Data Universal Numbering System. Every business that has a DUNS number has a corresponding D&B credit file, which is where your Paydex score and other business credit data are stored.

Think of it as a Social Security number for your business, but specifically within D&B’s ecosystem. It does not give you a credit score automatically. It simply creates the file where your credit history will eventually be recorded.

Why You Need a DUNS Number

Vendor and Supplier Applications

When you apply for net-30 terms with wholesale suppliers, office supply companies, or B2B vendors, many of them run a D&B check before extending credit. Without a DUNS number, you have no file for them to pull, which means they either deny your application or require a personal guarantee. Having a DUNS number and even a thin D&B file is better than having nothing.

Federal Contracts and SAM.gov Registration

If you ever plan to pursue government contracts, a DUNS number was historically required to register on SAM.gov (System for Award Management). Note that SAM.gov has moved toward using a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) system for new registrations, but many agencies and subcontracting chains still reference DUNS numbers in their vendor qualification processes. For a step-by-step walkthrough of the federal registration process, see our guide on how to register on SAM.gov.

Foundation of Your D&B Credit Profile

Your D&B Paydex score cannot exist without a DUNS number. The score is generated only after at least three vendors report payment experiences to D&B under your DUNS. If you wait to get your DUNS number, you delay the entire business credit building process by however long it takes to register, get approved, and then start the clock on vendor reporting cycles.

How to Get a DUNS Number for Free

Getting a DUNS number is free. D&B offers a paid expedited option, but it is not necessary for most businesses. Here is the step-by-step process:

Step 1: Go to the D&B Website

Navigate to Dun & Bradstreet’s official DUNS registration page. Look for the free registration option. D&B has redesigned its site multiple times, so the exact button label may vary, but it is always available at no cost.

Step 2: Enter Your Business Information

You will need to provide the following details exactly as they appear on your legal business registration:

  • Legal business name (must match your LLC or corporation registration exactly)
  • Physical business address (not a PO Box; use the address on your formation documents)
  • Phone number
  • Type of business structure (LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, sole proprietorship)
  • Number of employees
  • Year the business was started
  • Primary business activity or industry

Step 3: Submit and Wait

After submitting the application, D&B will assign your DUNS number, typically within one to five business days for the free option. You will receive it via email. If you need it faster for a specific vendor application or contract deadline, the paid expedited service can turn it around in one business day, but budget the time for the free option whenever possible.

What Happens After You Get Your DUNS Number

This is where many business owners get confused. Getting your DUNS number does not mean you have a credit score. It means D&B has opened a file for your business. That file is essentially empty until vendors start reporting payment experiences.

Your Paydex score will not generate until at least three separate vendors have reported payment data to D&B. This is why opening net-30 vendor accounts immediately after getting your DUNS number is the critical next step. The sooner vendors start reporting, the sooner you accumulate the payment history needed to generate and improve your score.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using the Wrong Business Address

Your D&B file is tied to a specific address. If your vendors, bank, and LLC registration all show different addresses, D&B may struggle to match payment reports to your file correctly. Use the same physical address consistently across all business accounts.

Not Matching Your LLC Registration Exactly

If your LLC is registered as “Carter Consulting LLC” but you apply for your DUNS under “Carter Consulting,” that mismatch can create problems. Vendors who check D&B will not find a match, and payment reports may not land in your file. Use the exact legal name from your state filing.

Registering Before Your Business Is Officially Formed

Some business owners try to get a DUNS number before they have formed their LLC or obtained their EIN. This creates a weak or mismatched file. Get your business structure set up, obtain your EIN from the IRS, and then register for your DUNS number. If you have not yet gotten your EIN, our guide on what an EIN is and how to get one walks through the process.

Paying for Expedited Processing When You Do Not Need It

D&B will offer you paid upgrade options throughout the registration process. Unless you have an immediate contract or vendor deadline, skip these. The free five-business-day window is perfectly adequate for the vast majority of business owners.

After Your DUNS: The Next 90 Days

Once your DUNS number arrives, your priority is populating your D&B file with positive payment data. Open three to five net-30 vendor accounts that report to D&B, make small purchases each month, and pay five to seven days before the due date. After three months of consistent reporting, you will have a Paydex score and the foundation for everything else in your business credit journey.
