Last week, Bill Gross — the founder who has built or launched more than 175 companies through Idealab since 1996 — unveiled something he’s been quietly building for the better part of two years: a platform called Idealab.ai that gives away 1.2 million AI-generated business ideas. For free.
Not leads. Not a SaaS upsell. 1.2 million business ideas, publicly accessible, with no paywall.
The move is unusual even by Silicon Valley standards. But Gross has a specific reason for doing it, and that reason is worth every entrepreneur’s attention right now.
The Real Story Here
Gross has spent 50 years developing what he calls 31 “methodologies” for generating business ideas — creative frameworks he breaks into three buckets: opportunities (solving pain points, removing friction, eliminating waste or danger), enablers (new technologies, cost curves shifting, scientific advances), and shifts (regulatory changes, cultural movements, behavioral changes in timing). These aren’t buzzwords. They’re the actual mental models behind companies like CarsDirect, Overture, and CitySearch.
What Gross did was feed all 31 of those methodologies into an AI model, pair them with 17 million source documents news stories, research reports, expired patents, public company filings, and online community discussion boards and let it generate ideas at scale. The output: 1.2 million business ideas.
Then he gave them all away.
“I’ve always wanted to have a positive impact with Idealab by starting many companies, but I can’t start 1.2 million,” Gross told Fortune. “But what about if I can empower entrepreneurship around the world way more than I’ve been able to do in Pasadena?”
The platform also includes what Gross calls a “Periodic Table of Business Functions” a framework charting 118 jobs required to launch and run a company, from customer discovery to operations to legal paired with an agentic AI environment to help entrepreneurs automate those tasks as they go.
By the Numbers
- 175+ companies launched through Idealab since 1996
- 1.2 million business ideas generated and released publicly via Idealab.ai
- 17 million source documents fed into the AI (patents, filings, research, news, forums)
- 31 idea-generation methodologies, refined over 50 years of company building
- 118 discrete business functions mapped in Gross’s Periodic Table of Business Functions
- 4.2 million new business applications filed in the U.S. in just the first five months of 2026, per Census Bureau data the entrepreneurship boom is real and accelerating
The Hustler’s Library Take
Here’s what most coverage of this story misses: Gross isn’t giving away ideas because he’s feeling generous. He’s giving them away because he genuinely believes the idea isn’t the bottleneck anymore execution is. And that belief is a direct challenge to how most aspiring entrepreneurs are spending their time.
Too many people treat idea generation like it’s the hard part. It isn’t. The hard part is Gross’s 118-function table: customer discovery, pricing, operations, legal, hiring, capital. That’s where companies actually live or die. The Idealab.ai move is effectively Gross saying: “Stop waiting for the lightning bolt. Pick a problem and start moving.”
The timing matters too. We’re in the middle of AI compressing startup timelines faster than at any point in history. What took five engineers two years now takes two engineers six months. The execution bar is lower. The idea supply has never been higher. If you’re still stuck on “I just need the right idea,” you’re solving the wrong problem.
There’s also something philosophically important in the 31 methodology framework. Notice that Gross doesn’t start with “what’s trending” or “what do VCs want.” He starts with pain, friction, waste, and timing. That’s a fundamentally different question from “what would be cool to build.” It’s closer to the timing problem every founder faces: is the market ready, and is the enabling technology there?
What You Should Do
1. Go to Idealab.ai and search by your industry. This isn’t a gimmick. These ideas were generated from 17 million real-world documents patents, filings, forums, research. Browse the category that matches your experience. You’re not looking for the idea to copy; you’re looking for the signal that confirms a real problem exists in a space you already understand.
2. Use Gross’s three-bucket filter on your own current idea. Before you build anything: (1) Is this a genuine opportunity friction, waste, pain? (2) Is there an enabler that makes it possible now that didn’t exist 3 years ago AI cost curves, new APIs, regulatory shift? (3) Is there a shift happening that makes the timing right a behavioral change, a generational move, a new economic pressure? If you can’t answer all three, the idea isn’t cooked yet.
3. Run your concept against Gross’s 118-function table. Even at a high level, mapping out which of those 118 functions you’ve thought through vs. which ones are blank spots tells you exactly where your plan has holes. Most founders are strong on product and weak on everything from customer discovery methodology to operations systems. Knowing where you’re weak isn’t discouraging it’s a roadmap. The founders who build durable companies aren’t the ones with the best ideas they’re the ones who filled in the blank spots before they ran out of runway.
