Xero Got AI. Claude Beat ChatGPT. Here’s What Small Business Owners Need to Know Right Now.

Person working on laptop with AI tools for side hustle income

Forbes flagged five small business tech stories worth your attention this week, and if you run a company, a side hustle, or anything in between, at least two of them should change how you operate starting today.

The headline: Xero added AI features to its accounting software, Google is making a play for law firm clients, and in what may be the most practically significant development of the week, Claude beat ChatGPT in head-to-head performance tests for small business use cases. All five stories, according to Forbes, point to the same underlying shift: AI has moved from tech-world curiosity to small business operating system.

What This Actually Means

Xero is one of the most widely used accounting platforms for small businesses and freelancers. When it bakes AI into bookkeeping, invoicing, and cash flow analysis, it is not just adding a shiny feature. It is compressing work that used to take hours into minutes. If you have been manually categorizing transactions or chasing down overdue invoices, that workflow is now automatable without switching tools or hiring a bookkeeper.

The Claude vs. ChatGPT finding is also worth sitting with. ChatGPT has dominated the public conversation for the past three years, but if you have been defaulting to it without testing alternatives, you may be leaving performance on the table. According to Forbes, Claude is pulling ahead specifically on business-focused tasks: drafting, summarizing, and structured analysis. For operators running AI-powered side hustles or using AI to handle client communications, that gap matters.

Google targeting law firms is the third story that stands out. It signals something bigger: enterprise AI is trickling down. When Google competes for professional services clients, the tools it deploys eventually become available to solo practitioners and small firm operators. If you work in consulting, law, accounting, or any knowledge-based field, the automation wave is closer than it looks.

The Numbers Behind It

The adoption curve is real and it is moving fast. McKinsey estimates that 35% of small businesses have meaningfully adopted AI into their operations, and that generative AI alone could add between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion in annual economic value across industries. Those are not startup projections. That is the floor estimate from one of the world’s most rigorous research firms.

Meanwhile, Bankrate found that 39% of Americans currently run a side hustle. The overlap between that group and people adopting AI tools is not a coincidence. When the tools drop in price and increase in capability, the barrier to launching a real income stream from your laptop gets lower every quarter. The freelance market reflects this too: Upwork reported freelance earnings grew 15% year-over-year in 2024, a trend that is accelerating as AI makes individual workers more productive and more competitive against larger teams.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has also tracked the structural shift: self-employment in technical services grew 14% between 2023 and 2025. People are not just picking up gig work. They are building real businesses as solo operators, and AI tools are the infrastructure making that possible.

The Hustler’s Library Take

The mistake most operators are making right now is waiting for a single killer AI tool before they change how they work. That is not how this plays out. The advantage goes to whoever assembles the right stack fastest. Xero for your books. Claude for your client communication and content. Automation for your follow-ups and invoicing. None of these are exotic or expensive. Most have free tiers. The stack exists today.

The Claude vs. ChatGPT story matters most to us. The debate about AI and jobs often misses the practical reality: the people who win are not the ones worried about which AI will replace them. They are the ones running both tools in parallel and figuring out which one writes better cold emails, summarizes client briefs faster, or builds a better proposal. Test. Iterate. Ship.

And if you have been holding off on AI because it felt like a tool for tech companies, Xero adding it to accounting software should remove that excuse. This is infrastructure for operators now, not a novelty for engineers.

What You Should Do

This week, run a side-by-side test. Take one real task you do regularly, whether it is writing a client proposal, drafting a follow-up email, or summarizing a report, and run it through both ChatGPT and Claude. Time how long each takes. Compare the output quality. Then pick a default and stick with it for 30 days. You will close that performance gap fast.

If you use Xero, log in and check what AI features have been activated. If you use QuickBooks or another platform, expect similar announcements within 60 days. Every major accounting platform is shipping AI this quarter. Get ahead of the configuration before it becomes the default you never set up properly.

If you are still operating without any AI tools, the Small Business Development Center offers free consulting, including tech adoption guidance. There is no reason to navigate the AI stack alone when there are free expert resources available in every state.

The gap between operators who have adopted AI and those who have not is widening. The people building with this technology are not waiting for permission or a perfect setup. They are iterating in real time, and the compounding advantage is significant. Start this week.
