Meta launched its new personal AI agent, Muse, earlier this month — and this week, it got a Mac app. According to Inc., the company’s chief AI officer Alexandr Wang put it plainly: “You can have it help you run your small business.”
That’s not marketing copy. Muse is designed to operate autonomously, keep working after you close the app, and come back to you only when it needs your approval. For solo operators and small teams, that’s a very different kind of tool than anything that’s come before it.
What This Actually Means
Most AI tools still require you to sit there. You prompt, it responds, you act. Muse is different: it’s an AI agent, meaning you give it a goal and it figures out the steps. Open a browser, fill out a form, send a message, negotiate a price — Meta says Muse can handle all of it, in the background, while you’re doing something else.
The Mac app, which launched September 17th, adds the ability to organize your files, pull information from Messages, Calendar, and Notes, and work across your whole desktop environment. That’s a meaningful step up from a phone app or web tab.
For freelancers and small business owners, the use cases write themselves: research a vendor, draft a proposal, schedule follow-ups, pull together a quote. Tasks that eat 20-30 minutes of admin time could run in the background while you’re on a client call.
Muse is free for most users, though Meta has indicated paid subscription tiers are coming for heavier use. The company hasn’t announced pricing yet.
The Numbers Behind It
The timing isn’t random. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Liberty Street Economics blog, 61% of businesses are now using AI in some form — but most are still using it as a fancy search engine rather than a true productivity multiplier. Autonomous agents are the next frontier.
Meta is also playing catch-up with purpose. The company has poured billions into its AI strategy overhaul to compete with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Muse is its consumer-facing answer — and notably, Meta is positioning it explicitly as a small business tool, not just a personal assistant.
The SBA reports there are 33 million small businesses in the United States. A free AI agent that can handle tasks autonomously — one that’s already on the phone most people carry — is a distribution play at a scale none of Meta’s competitors can match right now.
The Hustler’s Library Take
Here’s what matters for people running lean operations: the competitive advantage of AI is no longer about who has it. Everyone has access to chatbots now. The edge goes to whoever uses autonomous tools most effectively.
Muse is the first AI agent with Meta’s distribution muscle behind it. That means it will be everywhere — and it will be free to start. The operators who figure out how to wire it into their workflows in the next 90 days will have a repeatable process before most of their competitors have even opened the app.
The catch: agents still require you to define the tasks clearly. Garbage in, garbage out. If you don’t have clean SOPs for your business, an autonomous AI will just automate your chaos. Getting your operations tight first is still step one.
What You Should Do
This week:
- Download Muse (iOS, Android, or Mac app) and run one real business task through it — a vendor lookup, a draft email, a scheduling task.
- Identify two or three recurring admin tasks in your business that are repetitive and rule-based. Those are your first automation targets.
- Don’t wait for the paid tier to launch. The free version is the test bed. Get your reps in now so you know what it can and can’t do for your specific operation.
AI agents aren’t the future anymore. They’re this week. The question is whether you’re running one or just watching other people talk about it.
