Honeyjar Just Pulled Back the Curtain on What Good PR Actually Looks Like. Now Every Founder Can Use It.

A new AI startup called Honeyjar launched publicly this week with a blunt premise: the PR process is broken for most founders, and the expertise that solves it has always been locked behind expensive agency retainers. The company, founded by veteran PR executives Michelle Masek and Nadia Jamshidi, wants to change that. When Honeyjar opened its waitlist, it received 10,000 signups in the first 24 hours.

Masek most recently served as senior vice president of marketing and communications for Obvious Ventures, the firm founded by Twitter co-founder Ev Williams. She spent her time there trying to scale senior-level PR expertise across 110 portfolio companies. That experience, she told TechCrunch, is exactly what Honeyjar is bottling up.

What This Actually Means

Most small business owners and founders have two options when it comes to PR: hire an agency (starting around $3,000-$8,000/month for anyone reputable), or wing it with a cold pitch to a journalist who will never respond. Honeyjar is positioning itself as the third option.

The platform automates the parts of communications work that eat time without adding judgment: writing announcement drafts, building media lists, scanning for speaking opportunities, tracking coverage. But Masek is careful to say that is not the whole product. “The bigger idea is bringing the whole communications workflow together: signals, context, strategy, judgment, timing, and execution,” said co-founder Nadia Jamshidi.

That framing matters. Most AI writing tools will happily generate a press release. Honeyjar is trying to do something harder: encode the judgment of experienced PR professionals so the tool knows when not to pitch, which journalist actually covers your beat, and whether you are even ready for press coverage in the first place. “In some cases, Honeyjar might even tell a founder that they’re simply not ready for coverage,” Masek said.

Beta testers already include Nextdoor, robotics startup Coco Robotics, investor Bloomberg Beta, and agencies Mission North and Full Picture. That is a credible early roster that suggests the product is past the demo stage.

The Numbers Behind It

The 10,000 waitlist signups in 24 hours is the number that should get your attention. That is not viral fluke velocity; it is validated demand. Masek estimated there are “millions and millions of unassigned communicators” who carry the communications responsibility at their company without the title: marketers, investors, founders, authors, school administrators. She called the market “incredibly horizontal.”

Honeyjar is competing in a space alongside tools like Prowly, Muck Rack, and Cision, but most of those are built for professional PR agencies, not for the founder who has never written a pitch in their life. The framing of Honeyjar is closer to what Canva did for design: take a specialized skill that normally requires a professional, and make the output accessible to anyone.

The company is attending TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 this week as part of the Startup Battlefield 200, which means it has cleared a meaningful bar for public exposure.

The Hustler’s Library Take

Here is the angle most coverage will miss: this is not really about press coverage. It is about your reputation.

The reason PR has always been expensive is not because writing pitches is hard; it is because knowing which story to tell, to whom, at what moment, is a judgment call that takes years to develop. Most small business owners are not bad at communications because they lack tools. They are bad at it because they do not have a senior strategist telling them “do not pitch that story right now, your product is not there yet” or “this reporter covers exactly this problem.”

If Honeyjar actually delivers on that promise, the competitive moat it builds for early adopters is real. Businesses that get media coverage consistently do not just get traffic; they attract better talent, close deals faster, and build the kind of brand credibility that takes years of consistency to earn the hard way.

The contrarian take: not every small business needs press. If you are running a local service business, a great referral system and a solid Google profile will outperform a TechCrunch mention every time. But if you are building something that needs to reach a national audience, attract investors, or establish category authority, Honeyjar deserves a serious look.

What You Should Do

1. Get on the waitlist now. Honeyjar saw 10,000 signups in 24 hours. The early-access window on tools like this matters because you get to shape the product, build the media list before it is crowded, and get feedback on your narrative before your competitors do. Visit honeyjar.ai and get in the queue.

2. Audit your current communications workflow. Before any tool helps you, you need a story worth telling. Write down: What is the one thing your business does that nobody else does? Who does it help, and why does it matter right now? If you cannot answer those in two sentences, a PR tool will not save you. Honeyjar’s own founders say they will tell you when you are not ready. Do that diagnosis yourself first.

3. Think beyond press releases. Honeyjar’s vision is “signals, context, strategy, judgment, timing, and execution.” That is a complete communications operating system, not a media outreach widget. If you have been treating PR as a one-time push rather than an ongoing discipline, this is the moment to rethink that. Your reputation is built in between the press moments, not just during them.
