Small Business Funding in Singapore: Grants, VC, and More

Singapore’s startup funding ecosystem is among the most sophisticated in Asia. Between government-backed grant schemes, a vibrant venture capital community, and dedicated accelerator programs, entrepreneurs in Singapore have access to capital sources that would be the envy of most global cities. Whether you’re pre-revenue or raising a Series A, the funding infrastructure in Singapore is built to move fast and think big.

Government Grants and Schemes

Singapore’s government takes an active role in funding innovation and enterprise development. The following programs are among the most impactful for small businesses and startups:

Startup SG Founder Grant

Administered by Enterprise Singapore, the Startup SG Founder grant provides SGD 50,000 in funding to first-time entrepreneurs with innovative business concepts. The grant requires matching funds from the founder and mentorship from an Accredited Mentor Partner (AMP). It’s an excellent starting point for founders looking to validate an idea with meaningful capital.

Startup SG Equity

Under this scheme, Enterprise Singapore co-invests alongside third-party investors in Singapore-based startups. This means that when you raise a round from a qualified investor, the government may match their investment up to a defined cap, significantly extending your runway. The co-investment ratio varies by sector and stage.

Enterprise Development Grant (EDG)

The EDG supports Singapore businesses in growing and transforming across three pillars: core capabilities, innovation and productivity, and market access. Qualifying companies can receive up to 50% support (and up to 70% for smaller companies) on eligible project costs. This is especially valuable for businesses investing in digital transformation, automation, or international expansion.

MAS FinTech Grants

The Monetary Authority of Singapore runs several programs specifically targeting financial technology startups. The Financial Sector Technology and Innovation (FSTI) scheme supports proof-of-concept projects, infrastructure development, and talent development within the fintech ecosystem. Singapore’s position as a global fintech hub is directly supported by this sustained investment from MAS.

National Research Foundation (NRF) Grants

The NRF funds deep-tech ventures in areas like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and advanced manufacturing. For founders working at the intersection of science and commerce, NRF grants provide runway that traditional venture investors often cannot match at the earliest stages. The NRF also co-leads programs like Startup SG Tech, which supports proof-of-concept and proof-of-value projects.

Private Venture Capital in Singapore

Singapore is home to a robust private VC community with both local and international firms. Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia, Jungle Ventures, Monk’s Hill Ventures, Insignia Ventures, and GGV Capital all operate active investment programs in the region from Singapore bases. Corporate VCs attached to DBS, Temasek, and SGX round out the picture with later-stage capital and strategic support.

For seed-stage deals, angel networks like the Business Angel Network of Southeast Asia (BANSEA) and angel investor clubs connected to NUS and Nanyang Technological University provide both capital and mentorship to very early-stage companies.

Accelerators and Incubators

Singapore’s accelerator ecosystem has matured significantly over the past decade:

  • BLOCK71: The most recognized startup cluster in Singapore, located in one-north. BLOCK71 is a collaboration between NUS Enterprise, Infocomm Media Development Authority, and other partners. It hosts hundreds of startups and provides workspace, mentorship, and investor access.
  • Antler Singapore: Antler runs cohort-based accelerator programs offering initial investment in exchange for equity at the idea stage. Its global reach makes it especially useful for founders with international ambitions.
  • IMDA Innovation Hub: Focused on media, communications, and technology companies, with access to sandbox environments and regulatory guidance from IMDA.
  • EDB New Ventures: The Economic Development Board runs programs specifically targeting companies with potential to contribute to Singapore’s broader economic strategy, including manufacturing, advanced engineering, and biomedical sciences.

Bank and Alternative Financing

Beyond grants and equity, Singapore’s banks offer robust SME financing options. DBS, OCBC, and UOB all run dedicated SME banking programs with working capital loans, trade financing, and equipment financing. The government’s Enterprise Financing Scheme (EFS) provides partial government risk-sharing on loans to qualifying SMEs, improving terms and accessibility.

Peer-to-peer lending platforms like Funding Societies and Invoice Interchange provide alternative routes for businesses that need fast, flexible capital outside traditional bank channels.

Building Your Funding Strategy

Successful founders in Singapore typically stack multiple funding sources: a government grant to de-risk early development, angel or pre-seed capital to build the team, and institutional VC for scale. Understanding the full landscape from the start means you won’t leave capital on the table.
