OpenAI just made its biggest move yet toward the 33.2 million small businesses in the United States. The company announced the ChatGPT for Small Business program in July 2026, a structured initiative that gives small business owners access to live webinars, in-person AI academies, step-by-step guides, and a growing library of partner tools built specifically for lean teams. At the same time, OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT Work and Codex have crossed 10 million users, doubling Codex’s standalone user count from just weeks earlier.
This isn’t a marketing campaign. It’s a product push — and it’s aimed squarely at the small business owner who’s been watching AI from the sidelines.
What This Actually Means
The ChatGPT for Small Business program bundles four things into one push: virtual training webinars that walk owners through real use cases in accounting, marketing, and eCommerce; in-person OpenAI Academy events across the U.S. with guided instruction and peer support; content including customer stories and short-form videos; and plugins and partner integrations built around ChatGPT Work.
ChatGPT Work — powered by GPT-5.6 — is the engine behind all of it. OpenAI describes it as an agent that can spend hours on a complex project, take action across your apps and files, and deliver finished spreadsheets, slide decks, web apps, or documents. The pitch: enterprise-grade AI, at a price point accessible to a two-person shop.
According to PYMNTS, citing Citadel Securities research, U.S. business applications have risen 24% since ChatGPT launched. The median number of employees at seed-stage startups has fallen at the same time. Translation: founders are doing more with fewer hands. This program is OpenAI’s direct response to that reality — and a signal that the AI-native solo operator is becoming the norm, not the exception. You can read more about building that kind of lean team in our guide to designing your ideal work week as a small business owner.
The Numbers Behind It
The timing of this program makes sense when you look at where small business AI adoption actually stands. McKinsey reported that only about 35% of small businesses had meaningfully adopted AI as of 2025. That leaves roughly 21 million U.S. small businesses still operating without AI in their core workflows, a gap OpenAI is now explicitly trying to close.
ChatGPT Work hit 10 million users across Work and Codex — a milestone that doubled in a matter of weeks, suggesting accelerating uptake. And Citadel Securities’ finding that new business applications jumped 24% since ChatGPT’s launch points to something bigger: AI isn’t just improving existing businesses, it’s enabling entirely new ones to form faster and leaner than before.
The Federal Reserve’s 2025 survey found that 43% of small business owners work more than 60 hours a week. If ChatGPT Work can absorb even a fraction of the administrative and operational load that drives that number, the productivity case becomes obvious. We’ve already covered how AI is creating small business jobs, not killing them — this program is another data point in that direction.
The Hustler’s Library Take
Here’s the thing most people won’t say out loud: this program exists because the majority of small business owners haven’t figured out how to use AI yet, and OpenAI is tired of waiting for organic adoption. They need small business penetration to justify the platform, the pricing tiers, and the partner ecosystem they’re building on top of ChatGPT.
That’s fine. Both parties benefit. But the owners who treat this as a free training resource and actually show up to the webinars and academies will be positioned differently than those who see it as another tech announcement to scroll past. The gap between the AI-literate small business owner and the one still doing everything manually is growing fast. Tools like these are how you close it. If you’re still figuring out which AI tools are worth your time, our breakdown of why learning to use AI well is the hard part is a good starting point — and so is our rundown of AI-powered income streams you can build with ChatGPT.
What You Should Do
- Sign up for the ChatGPT Small Business Program directly. Go to openai.com/leads/small-business and register. The webinars cover accounting, marketing, and eCommerce — three areas where small businesses consistently spend the most time on tasks that can be delegated to an AI agent. This is free training from the company that built the tool.
- Map your 60-hour week to ChatGPT Work before you attend. Before the first webinar, write down the five tasks that eat the most time in your business each week. Then bring that list. The owners who get the most out of structured AI training are the ones who show up with specific problems, not vague curiosity. If 43% of owners are working 60-plus hours a week, most of them know exactly where the hours go.
- Test ChatGPT Work on one real deliverable this week. Don’t wait for the program to officially start. Use ChatGPT Work to produce something you’d normally outsource or avoid: a marketing email sequence, a financial summary, a product description set. Treat it as a proof-of-concept for your specific business, not a demo. Real output from your actual business context is the fastest way to understand what the tool can and can’t do for you.
The program is live now. Registration is open. The 65% of small businesses still on the sidelines of AI adoption are running out of runway to stay there.
