Singapore Business Trip Prep: Visas, Banking, Time Zones, and First-Week Setup

Singapore is one of the most business-ready cities on earth, but showing up underprepared costs you time and money during the week that matters most. This guide covers everything you need to sort before you board: visas, banking, time zone math, remote work infrastructure, and the cultural context that separates entrepreneurs who close deals from those who just attend meetings.

Visas and Entry Requirements

Good news for US citizens: no advance visa required. Americans receive 90-day visa-free entry to Singapore on arrival. Most Western passport holders (UK, EU, Canada, Australia) are in the same situation. Simply show up with a valid passport and a return ticket.

If you hold an APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC), you get dedicated fast-track immigration lanes at Changi — a serious time-saver if you’re cycling through the region regularly. Worth applying for if you do more than 3–4 Asia-Pacific trips per year.

For the most current entry requirements and any updates, check directly with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) before travel. Requirements can shift, and it’s a 5-minute check that prevents major headaches.

Banking and Foreign Exchange Setup

Do this before you get on the plane: open a Wise account and load it with USD. Wise converts to Singapore Dollars at the mid-market exchange rate with transparent, low fees — far better than any airport booth, hotel desk, or traditional bank foreign transaction fee. It functions as a contactless Visa debit card the moment you land.

Revolut is a solid backup option with similar functionality. Both apps let you hold multiple currencies and switch between them on demand.

If you need physical cash for hawker centres or small vendors, DBS and OCBC ATMs are on virtually every block in the CBD. Withdraw there rather than at the airport. If you need a larger cash exchange, Mustafa Centre in Little India has some of the most competitive retail FX rates in Singapore and is open 24 hours.

Avoid: airport money changers on arrival, hotel front desk currency exchange, and any booth displaying “0% commission” (they make their margin in the rate).

Time Zone Math: Scheduling Across the Pacific

Singapore Standard Time is UTC+8. That puts it 16 hours ahead of US Pacific Time (PST) and 13 hours ahead of US Eastern Time.

The practical implication: the only overlap window for live calls with a US West Coast team is 8–9AM Singapore time, which is 4–5PM PST the previous calendar day. Schedule those calls into your first task of each morning or they won’t happen.

Tools worth using: World Time Buddy for visual scheduling across time zones, and building a secondary clock widget on your phone’s home screen. Your US clients will appreciate the effort of scheduling at reasonable hours rather than demanding they take midnight calls.

One practical tip: adjust your sleep schedule 3 days before departure. Singapore is a long flight and a big time difference. Arriving jet-lagged for a week of meetings is a preventable problem.

Remote Work and Connectivity Setup

On arrival at Changi, grab a Singtel Hi! Tourist SIM from the telco booths in the Arrivals hall — 100GB of data for around SGD 15 on a 10-day plan. Singapore has exceptional 5G infrastructure island-wide, so you’ll have fast, reliable mobile data everywhere. Alternatively, buy an Airalo eSIM before departure and activate it the moment you land.

For coworking space, Singapore has a mature ecosystem. The major operators are WeWork (multiple locations in the CBD), JustCo (Singapore’s homegrown leader, with premium locations at Marina One and CapitaGreen), and The Work Project (boutique, design-forward spaces favored by finance and tech professionals). Book your first week’s desk in advance — drop-in availability in the CBD is limited. Read our full guide to coworking spaces in Singapore for detailed options and pricing.

Health, Safety, and Insurance

Singapore is consistently ranked among the safest cities in the world. Violent crime is extremely rare. Tap water is fully drinkable. The main health concern is the heat and humidity — stay hydrated and acclimatize during your first 24 hours rather than packing your schedule immediately.

No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry, but travel health advisors typically recommend being current on hepatitis A and typhoid given Singapore’s food culture (hawker centres are safe, but you’ll be eating adventurously).

Get travel insurance before departure. Allianz and World Nomads both offer solid international coverage for business travelers. Singapore’s private healthcare is excellent but expensive for uninsured visitors. A straightforward ER visit can run USD 500+.

Business Culture: What Actually Matters

Singapore operates at the intersection of multiple business cultures, and understanding the blend matters:

  • Relationships before transactions. Meetings rarely start with the pitch. Budget time for small talk and don’t rush past it.
  • Hierarchy is real. Know who the decision-maker is in the room and direct key points toward them.
  • Formality in contracts. What gets verbally agreed in a meeting needs to be formalized in writing. Follow every meeting with a summary email the same day.
  • Punctuality is non-negotiable. Being late in Singapore reads as disrespectful, not casual.
  • Business cards are ceremonial objects. Present and receive with both hands. Never write on a card or pocket it immediately.

Apps to Download Before You Arrive

  • Grab — rideshare, food delivery, and payments. The super-app of Southeast Asia.
  • MyTransport.SG — official transit app for MRT and bus real-time info.
  • WhatsApp — the primary business communication channel in Singapore. Expect to be added to WhatsApp groups for every meeting.
  • Singpass — Singapore’s national digital identity system. If you’re setting up any business entity or banking relationship locally, you’ll need this.
  • Google Maps — works perfectly in Singapore with real-time transit directions.

What to Book in Advance

Singapore’s business hospitality is competitive. Don’t leave these until you land:

  • Hotel — book near the CBD, Marina Bay, or Orchard Road. The best hotels for business travelers in Singapore are our curated shortlist.
  • Coworking desk or meeting room — especially if you need a professional address for client meetings.
  • Restaurant reservations — Singapore’s restaurant scene is internationally acclaimed and books out. Popular spots are full days in advance.

Pack a quality metal business card holder, bring a set of packing organizers to keep your bag sharp, and get a universal power strip with Type G plugs so one adapter handles your entire hotel room setup.

If you haven’t yet, review our Singapore Business Travel Packing List alongside this guide — together they cover your full pre-departure and on-the-ground setup. And if the trip turns into something more permanent, our how to start a business in Singapore guide walks through entity setup, banking, and the regulatory landscape.

Make Singapore Work for Your Business

Singapore rewards preparation. The entrepreneurs who show up knowing the time zone math, with a Wise card already loaded, coworking space booked, and business cards in a proper case — those are the ones who hit the ground running instead of spending the first three days fixing logistics.
