Goldman Sachs Just Committed $500M to Teach Small Businesses AI. Here’s How to Get In.

Goldman Sachs dropped a significant announcement this week: a $500 million commitment to launch the Goldman Sachs Small Business AI Institute, a formal extension of its flagship 10,000 Small Businesses program built specifically to help Main Street catch up to the AI economy.

The Institute is partnering with Anthropic, Google, Meta, and OpenAI to deliver AI education, hands-on workshops, and access-to-capital tools to small business owners across all 50 states. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon put it plainly: “Every major technology shift has rewarded the businesses that adapt most quickly. This commitment makes sure the entrepreneurs who are creating America’s jobs can lead in the AI economy.”

The Real Story Here

The headline number is 86%. That is the share of small businesses surveyed under the 10,000 Small Businesses program that now report using AI, up from 56% in 2024. A 30-point jump in two years is not a trend. It is a structural shift.

But here is the number that actually matters: only 15% said AI is fully integrated into their core operations. And more than three-quarters said they could use more training.

That gap between “we are using AI” and “AI is actually running part of our business” is where your real competitive window lives right now. The 85% who adopted without integration are doing the equivalent of buying a gym membership and never going. They are logging in, asking ChatGPT a few questions, and calling it an AI strategy.

By the Numbers

  • $500 million — Goldman Sachs’ new commitment to the Small Business AI Institute and next 10,000 businesses
  • 86% — share of 10,000 Small Businesses graduates now using AI in their operations (Goldman Sachs survey of 2,400+ graduates, October 2026)
  • 56% — where that number was in 2024, a 30-point increase in two years
  • 15% — share who say AI is fully integrated into their core operations
  • 75%+ — share who say they need more AI training and resources
  • ~20,000 — small business owners who will get access to Google’s Grow with Google AI Professional certificate through the Institute, including three months of no-cost Google AI Pro
  • $32 billion — combined annual revenue of existing 10,000 Small Businesses graduates, who add jobs four times faster than similarly-sized U.S. firms

The Hustler’s Library Take

Every few months another survey lands with a big AI adoption number and the story writes itself: adoption is up, congratulations, everyone is winning. What most coverage misses is the integration chasm sitting underneath that headline.

Here is what Goldman Sachs actually built: not a survey, not a report, but a credentialed training infrastructure backed by the four companies building the tools. The Grow with Google AI Pro access, the Anthropic applied AI learning series, the OpenAI workshops at community colleges — this is the difference between a press release and a program. When Goldman commits $500 million and gets Sam Altman, Daniela Amodei, and Ruth Porat in the same announcement, they are not dabbling. They are betting that AI fluency in small business is the next economic development frontier.

The contrarian read: programs like this tend to serve businesses already predisposed to grow. The 10,000 Small Businesses alumni who show up to Anthropic workshops are already the 15% doing real integration. The remaining 70% who adopted without depth will not find this by googling. That makes it your job to actively seek this out, not wait for it to land in your inbox.

What You Should Do

1. Get on the waitlist for the Small Business AI Institute. Visit gs.com/SBAI and track when applications open. The Google AI Pro access alone (normally $20/month) is worth it, and the credentialed certificate from Goldman-backed coursework carries real weight with lenders and partners. This is not vaporware, it ships with real partners.

2. Audit your own integration depth before the next cohort opens. Adoption is table stakes in 2026. The gap is between using AI for one-off tasks and having AI actually embedded in a workflow that runs without you. Pick one repeatable process — customer follow-up, weekly reporting, proposal drafting — and rebuild it so AI handles the first 80%. That is what “integrated” looks like.

3. Use the Goldman Sachs data in your next pitch or partnership conversation. If you are trying to close a loan, bring on a partner, or recruit an employee, being able to say your business is in the 15% with genuine AI integration is a differentiator. The data room playbook covers how to document this. Use it.

The 85% who are using AI without integrating it are your competition. And they just fell another lap behind.
