Dubai Business Trip Prep: Visas, Banking, Culture, and First-Week Setup

Dubai doesn’t reward improvisation. The city runs on specific schedules, specific cultural norms, and a specific legal framework that differs meaningfully from what most Western entrepreneurs are used to. The good news: Dubai is extremely well set up for international business. Sort the logistics in advance and you’ll have one of the smoothest, most productive business trips you’ve ever taken.

Visas and Entry

US citizens receive 90-day visa-free entry on arrival at Dubai International Airport. Your passport is stamped in immigration and you’re in. Most Western passport holders (UK, EU, Canadian, Australian) have the same arrangement — either visa-free or visa-on-arrival.

For the most current requirements, especially if your passport is non-Western or if your circumstances are unusual, check the official UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) before travel. Requirements do shift occasionally and an official check takes two minutes.

If you’re planning to set up a business entity, open a corporate bank account, or take on a commercial lease in Dubai, you’ll need additional documentation beyond your entry visa. That process starts after arrival and varies by free zone. More on that below.

Banking and Currency Setup

The UAE Dirham is fixed at 3.67 AED per USD — permanently. This is one of the most traveler-friendly currency situations in the world. You know the rate before you leave home and it doesn’t change.

For the trip itself, a Wise card is your best tool. Load it with USD and convert to AED at the mid-market rate. Standard Visa and Mastercard from US banks work everywhere in Dubai’s business districts, and contactless is universal at hotels, restaurants, and retail. Emirates NBD, Mashreq, and ADCB ATMs are in every mall and hotel lobby in DIFC and Downtown Dubai.

For longer-term banking needs during an extended stay or business setup, Standard Chartered and HSBC both operate full branches in Dubai with English-speaking staff familiar with international business clients. Emirates NBD is the largest local bank and worth knowing if you’re building a relationship with a local institution.

Time Zone: Planning Around GST

Dubai runs on Gulf Standard Time: UTC+4. That’s 12 hours ahead of US Eastern Time and 15 hours ahead of US Pacific Time.

The scheduling implication: 8AM in Dubai is 8PM PST the previous evening. That’s a workable overlap if your US team has flexibility for evening calls. The window closes fast in both directions — schedule early in Dubai’s morning before the workday accelerates, and communicate the time math clearly so your US colleagues aren’t confused about which day you’re on.

Dubai does not observe daylight saving time. The offset is constant year-round, which simplifies scheduling compared to cities that shift.

The Weekend Is Different Here

This catches first-time visitors off guard: the UAE work week runs Sunday through Thursday. Friday is a holy day (and a half-day for many businesses). Saturday and Sunday are part of the weekend.

If you’re arriving on a Thursday, your first full working day is Sunday. Schedule client meetings starting Sunday and don’t expect Friday afternoon responses. Book your travel around this calendar rather than assuming a Western five-day week applies.

Business Setup: Free Zones and Foreign Ownership

If you’re evaluating Dubai as a base for your business, the free zone structure is what makes it attractive for international entrepreneurs:

  • DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) — world-class financial and professional services hub, common law jurisdiction (English-language contracts), 100% foreign ownership, no corporate tax on qualifying income.
  • DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre) — one of the world’s largest free zones, broad range of business activities permitted, consistently ranked the global free zone of the year.
  • Dubai Mainland — recent legislative reforms now allow 100% foreign ownership in many mainland business activities. Verify current rules with a UAE-licensed business setup consultant, as the approved activity list changes.

For any business setup work, engage a registered UAE business setup advisor before making commitments. The process moves quickly once you have the right documentation. Our how to start a business in Dubai guide covers the entity setup process in detail.

Safety and Healthcare

Dubai is among the safest cities in the world for business travelers. Crime rates are extremely low in business districts. Women traveling solo consistently report feeling safe in DIFC, Downtown, and Business Bay areas.

No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry. Travel insurance is strongly recommended — Dubai’s private healthcare system is world-class (American Hospital Dubai, Mediclinic, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi are all nearby and excellent), but costs are high for uninsured visitors. A standard travel insurance policy from Allianz or World Nomads covers both medical and trip disruption.

Key Apps to Download Before Arrival

  • Careem — primary rideshare app (Uber-owned). More reliable than street taxis for airport pickups.
  • Talabat — dominant food delivery platform in the UAE.
  • WhatsApp — primary business communication channel. Expect to exchange WhatsApp contacts rather than email addresses after meetings.
  • UAE PASS — national digital identity app, required if you’re registering a business, opening a bank account, or accessing government services.
  • Google Maps — works accurately in Dubai for navigation and transit routing.

What to Book in Advance

Don’t leave accommodation until you land. For maximum business proximity and networking access, book in DIFC, Business Bay, or Downtown Dubai. Top choices:

  • The Address Downtown — directly above Dubai Mall, premier business address
  • Vida Hotels — boutique, design-forward, favored by tech and startup community
  • FIVE Hotels — well-located with strong networking events and a lively professional social scene
